Today I have some links for you, recipes and articles I've spotted recently on the Internet.

  • Great piece from Canadian doctor, Yoni Freedhoff, on the most important skill for weight loss. As he says "It's not willpower, determination or motivation. It's not avoiding carbs or sugar or fats. And it's not cooking, hitting the gym or sticking to your plan." To find out what it is then read Yoni's piece here.

  • Fat facts and fiction: There's a great summary of the health benefits or not of different types of fat at ConsumerReports.org. There's a lot written about fats, particularly on the Internet and much of it is misleading. This article clearly outlines current knowledge.

  • Over at the The New York Times website, Martha Rose Shulman has published a series of healthy fish recipes, including this lovely looking and simple Oven Poached Fish with Lemon & Caper Sauce. Her article includes a link to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch website, a great resource for finding out the most sustainable fish to purchase.

  • These Carrot and Sesame Burgers are great barbecue food. I made a large batch of them for our Easter weekend barbecue. They were delicious and went down a treat.

  • I'm a regular watcher of Nisha Katona's great Youtube broadcasts on Indian cooking. She's engaging and interesting to watch and each episode features a recipe. However she also goes into some of the underlying principles of Indian cooking - how spices are used, why certain ingredients are added - and it's this part I find so interesting. I always learn something from her videos. The latest is on cooking a vegetable curry.

04 May 2012 ,14:06 1 way to eat more vegetables and cut your kilojoule intake
One sure-fire strategy to increase the amount of vegetables you're eating and reduce the total kilojoules you eat, is to fill half your dinner plate with vegetables.

By having half a plate of vegies in the evening you'll get at least three of your daily five serves of vegetable in one meal, possibly more.

Moreoever, by half-filling your plate with vegetables you're leaving less room for meat, chicken, fish, pasta, rice, potatoes - the other foods which contribute most to the kilojoules in your meal.

There's nothing wrong with eating regular portions of these carbohydrate and protein rich foods. However many people eat too many of them and too much leads to weight gain.

So fill your plate with vegies and you'll be improving your health in at least two different ways.

The internet is a wonderful resource - so much information out there, including wonderful articles, recipes and thoughts on food.  Here are some of the recipes and resources I'm liking at the moment:

Steamed egg custards: I'm intrigued by this steamed egg custard from Mummy I Can Cook. Especially topped with a bit of soy sauce, some chopped green shallots, chilli and a dash of sesame oil. I plan to make this recipe very soon.

Marinating olives: A lovely way to spark up olives, by marinating in garlic, thyme and rosemary.  Perfect make-ahead finger food for a drinks or dinner party by Gourmande in the Kitchen.

Start losing weight: A great resource on the NHS website, about the steps to take when you want to lose weight.  Full of really practical advice. I particularly like the "Do Today" and "Do This Week" lists.

Pear Muffins: While we don't all have our own orchard, you can still make these delicious muffins from Tea and Cookies.  They're spiced up with ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg and sweetened with honey and pear puree, instead of sugar.  They'd make a delicious breakfast or snack.

Grilled haloumi and beetroot salad: What a cracking salad from Food and the Fabulous - grilled haloumi combined with greens and grated beetroot, then topped with toasted pumpkin seeds and a zesty lime dressing.
