Build a Moroccan style bench seat from recycled timber

Most of the parts for this simple bench seat are cut from 90 x 15mm fence palings, except for the hidden treated pine legs and rails. Cut all the components using a circular saw or mitresaw.

 

Nails keep the components secure while exterior-grade construction adhesive cures and makes the bench sturdy. For speed use an impulse nail gun, but a hammer and a bag of 40mm galvanised bullethead nails also do the job.



USING FENCE PALINGS

 

Timber from fences is well seasoned, recyclable wood and because of the shape palings are also good for picture and mirror frames. Leave them raw or sand back to reveal rich red-brown tones.

 

If using raw palings scrub them clean or use a wire brush to remove any dirt and loose splinters. If you’re planing the timber, first remove all nails and any rotten ends while wearing gloves to avoid splinters.

 

Use 80 grit abrasive paper to smooth the palings, remove splinters and round over exposed edges.

CREATE A WEATHERED FINISH
The whitewash finish is made by diluting the leftovers of a can of white primer in a ratio of two parts primer to one part water, splashed on without too much care then lightly smoothed for a weathered effect.
