This attached deck (fixed to a ground-floor apartment) is set on treated pine timber posts on slightly sloping ground. Its highest point is some 1800mm above ground level. The posts along the straight side (Fig. 1) extend 900mm above the deck to support a pair of tables that carry a drop-in barbecue and sink. The supporting bearers are housed into the top of the posts and carry the 450mm-centred joists that are also attached to a ledger Dynabolted to the walls of the home. The joists are clad with blackbutt hardwood and finished in Cabot’s Natural Decking Oil.A stainless steel wire balustrade would have been perfect for a nautical look, but council regulations insisted on glass panels to match the balustrade on the adjoining apartment.
