If you often opt for a muffin in an attempt to snack more healthily, you’re being fooled.

Packed with sugar, most are a diet disaster. They can contain 2430kJ each (“skinny”-style muffins rate only slightly better at 1630kJ).

This equals about two Mars Bars or three slices of cheese on toast. If you’re craving a sweet treat, it’s better to eat one Kit Kat (two fingers, 443kJ), a small bar of dark chocolate (40g, 960kJ) or two slices of brown toast with honey (1035kJ).

All the "healthy" marketing is nonsense for the muesli bars and muffins which are supposed to be low fat. If I can eat dark chocolate for the same calories I'll take that any day. At least I enjoy it more.
