Controlling mosquitoes
Female mossies need blood to develop eggs and use their saliva containing an anticoagulant to suck up a meal. Skin reacts because the immune system produces histamine to combat the substance. Apply an ice pack for relief.

Bug zappers provide a satisfying sizzle but biting insects generally make up less than 1% of bugs zapped.
PHYSICAL CONTROL
Mosquitoes breed in still water so empty saucers under potted plants and fill with damp sand, rake up wet leaves and install a fountain in ponds to keep water moving. Consider using netting from camping stores as a barrier.
NATURAL CONTROL
Reduce numbers by planting citrosa geranium, marigold, catnip and rosemary in the garden close to the house and outdoor entertaining areas as these plants emit odours that mosquitoes don’t like.
CHEMICAL CONTROL
The most effective insect repellents are those containing DEET, a synthetic oil that scientists say works by masking the smell of human sweat, the scent that alerts mosquitoes to the presence of a meal.
