Deck Photo: Handyman

Positioning a deck on a slope is a simple matter of lengthening the posts or piers supporting the platform as the ground falls away.

SETTING OUT THE DECK
Trees can be left as a design feature and to provide shade. Establish the deck height from features such as the rear doors, then set up stringlines with a dumpy or laser level as a guide for footings, posts, bearers and joists.

CHOOSING THE TIMBER
Use Class 1 durability hardwood posts or H4 level treated pine. Bearers and joists can be Class 1 or 2 durability hardwoods or H3 treated pine.

TIP Decking such as merbau, blackbutt or tallowwood are durable, treated pine is cost effective and composite boards are low maintenance.

BUILDING IT RIGHT
All fixings, from stirrups to screws and nails, should be hot-dipped galvanised. Use stainless steel fasteners in coastal areas.

Elevated decks also need 1000mm balustrading to prevent falls. Steps should be wide enough for two people to pass with a handrail for safety.
