We all know swimwear shopping can be as torturous as a trip to the dentist. But according to Jessika Allen, designer of Australian brand Jets Swimwear, there are ways to minimise the pain.

“Make sure you’re feeling confident before you shop,” says Allen. “Eat a healthy breakfast, wear comfortable shoes, get a fake tan – do whatever it takes to feel good.”

While shopping, Allen advises wearing loose clothes, since they’re easy to get in and out of, and to always keep an open mind. Try on all different types of swimwear and don’t be afraid to ask specialist staff for their help.

This summer, Allen predicts whimsical prints, jewel colours, pleating and corset styles will be the hottest trends on the beach.

The bikini-wary will be glad to know the one-piece is officially back. “They’re the little black dresses of swimwear,” declares Allen. “An essential part of every woman’s summer wardrobe.”

Finally, look for quality fabric and structuring. “This will enhance your natural curves, giving you smooth lines to create the most flattering silhouette possible,” adds Allen.

Bikin tips for everyone

• Few of us are exactly the same size all over, so buy separates instead of a set.

• Avoid string bikinis if you’re worried about them untying – it’s better to be safe than sorry!

• Black is slimming, and looks good with or without a tan.

• There are plenty of nice rash shirts out there this summer. They’re great for sun protection and stream-lining lumps and bumps.

How to find the perfect swimsuit fit

Expert swimsuit tips from Jessika Allen:

• Pear shape: “Wear swimwear that gives the appearance of a waist and provides good coverage of your bottom half. Go for strong fabrics or high waist bikini bottoms.”

• Small bust: “Having a smaller bust doesn’t mean you should wear too-tiny togs. Moulded boosters or fitted cups are a great option.”

• Large bust: “Ensure you select swimmers that have strong structure and support. Underwire is always good, however, also choose sturdy fabric, which gives greater support.”

• Big tummy: “Choose flattering swimmers with a subtle gathering or extra support in the tummy area. Or experiment with styles with strong V-neck details to lift the eye.”
