Build a freestanding planter
Attach pine legs to a hardwood toolbox then paint it and plant with herbs for a mini kitchen garden

DIY - $25 (Have it done for $175)
Skill - 1/5
Time - 3 hours
An old timber tray for garden tools was picked up from a council rubbish collection and converted into a planter in only a few hours for just a few dollars.
Look for a hardwood box about 600 x 300mm at secondhand stores to mount on legs cut from treated pine then paint it in a bright colour.
PLANTING THE HERBS
For a fast crop, plant herb and vegie seedlings instead of seeds, watering them in well.
Line the box with landscape fabric, add a 20mm layer of gravel, cover with more fabric then top with a quality potting mix.
TIP The handle on this tray makes the planter easy to move to catch the best available sunlight.
Making the planter
Clean the box thoroughly, sand all over and attach 400mm long legs cut from 65 x 65mm treated pine using a handsaw.
TIP - Adding legs ensures good drainage and makes the planter more accessible for harvesting.

| Niels Holm on 03 June 2012 ,11:01 Hi, I am looking for the plans to the Planter box featured in the March edition of Handyman which I bought. It is on page 7 and says that the plans are online. Your sort function does not bring up the results. Could you please direct me to where the plans are. Thanks you, Regards Niels |
