How to Build a DVD Shelf
Build a shelf from scrap timber to store movies and small books
| Build a shelf from scrap timber to store movies and small books. Make this with as many shelves as you need by lengthening the vertical centre and spacing it for more shelves. We used oak left over from a previous building project, but you can use maple for a similar look, or even pine. When fixing the shelf to the wall, use plastic plugs in masonry walls and hollow wall anchors in plasterboard walls. Download DVD Shelf project PDF |

STEP 1
Cut timber to length
Cut the centre piece to 865 x 140 x 19mm and shelves to 180 x 140 x 19mm. Bevel one end of each shelf by tilting the mitre saw or table saw blade to 5º. Set the bevel gauge at 5º using the mitre gauge and fence of a tablesaw.

STEP 2
Mark and cut the notches
Using the sliding bevel gauge, mark the notches on the edge of the centre piece. Cut notches using a pull saw and guide block set at 5º. Lightly sand all cut edges with 120-grit abrasive paper.

STEP 3
Assemble the shelf
Test-fit each shelf then glue into place. If a shelf fits so tightly it’s difficult to remove after test fitting, leave it (no glue is needed). Apply a finish. Screw metal brackets to the top and bottom of the centre piece and fix it to the wall.
Added strength
For sturdier shelves, pre-drill and drive 50mm x 8g screws through opposing face of centre piece into the centre of the shelf at butt join.
Notch positions
From the top of the centre, make notches at 215mm, 290mm, 440mm, 515mm, 670mm and 745mm.
