| Use power-drill skills to build a kid’s toy. This classic timber toy is a chance to use an electric drill with a few basic hand tools. Make it from dressed all round (DAR) pine and cut the pieces with a tenon saw and mitre box, or an electric saw, before starting the steps. Finish with a child-safe shellac coating. STEP 1
Cut the parts
On the cab sides, mark the windows 30mm from the top and 20mm from the sides, using a coping saw to cut then smooth with a flat file. Mark the curve for the end of the trailer by tracing around a tin, cut with a coping saw and sand.

STEP 2
Make the wheels
Use a 73mm holesaw fitted to a drill for all wheels and a 47mm holesaw for the trailer connection hub disc. TIP Cut halfway through the timber then flip it over to complete the hole. Fit a side handle to the drill when using large holesaws.

STEP 3
Smooth the wheels
To use an electric drill like a mini lathe to smooth the wheels, place a 6mm bolt through the centre hole, secure with a nut and clamp into the drill chuck. Run the drill at high speed to spin the wheels against a sanding block clamped to the workbench.

STEP 4
Assemble the cab base
Apply PVA adhesive then clamp the cab base to the bonnet block. Fit a depth-stop ring to the drill shaft, locking with grub screw on the side and use a 6mm brad point bit to drill two holes from underside to reinforce the connection with the dowels.

STEP 5
Assemble the cab top
Secure the top to the sides using a 6mm brad point bit to drill holes for dowels and adhesive, secure sides to the base. Fit the trailer connect hub then glue and dowel the axle block 25mm from the end of the trailer. Drill a hole for the radiator cap dowel.

STEP 6
Make the axle holes
Mark axle holes on the cab base and trailer block, drilling halfway through with a 6mm. Complete the holes from other side, widening with a 9mm bit. Repeat for the axle hub. TIP Use an offcut with a line on the side as a visual aid to drill holes straight.
