Use environmentally sound materials to build old-style trunks.

Based on a classic travelling trunk design these bedside cabinets are made from sustainable eco plywood and managed forest pine, with mitre joints strengthened with slip tongues. Use a mitre saw to cut the pieces Antiqued before beginning. Distress the timber for an antiqued finish by banging the cabinet with chain, then sanding and working the stain into the gouges using a dabbing action. We used Cabot’s Interior Stain in Cedar with traditional brass hardware.

STEP 1

Mitre the sides
Using a mitre saw set at 45º, cut the long edges of the side pieces. Position the sides face down and adjust the saw to cut 6mm-deep grooves, square to the mitred edges, to fit the tongues (see Diagram 1).

STEP 2

Assemble the cabinet
Apply adhesive to the grooves and mitred edges and insert the tongues to assemble the cabinet, wiping away excess adhesive with a damp cloth. Position corner block clamps and use belt clamps to close the joints.

STEP 3

Attach the bands
Secure the base to the sides using adhesive and 40mm x 1.2mm bullet-head nails. Using a mitre saw set at 45º, cut the ends of the bands to fit around the cabinet, sand then secure with adhesive and 20mm x 1mm panel pins at each mitred corner

STEP 4

Attach the rim
Using a router make a 10mm-deep x 22mm-wide rebate along the rims, mitre the ends then use a hand plane to remove the arris from the edge of the ply and rims. Apply adhesive to the edge and secure with 20mm panel pins.

STEP 5

Cut grooves in the lid rails
Using a router and 6mm grooving cutter, make a 6 x 6mm groove in the centre of the inside edge of the lid rail and either side of the centre rail. Mitre the outside lid-rail ends then cut tenons on the ends of the centre rail to fit the groove.

STEP 6

Clamp the lid
Apply adhesive to the tenons and mitres of the lid rails then assemble around the lid panels and position in sash clamps. Position clamps over the top, lined up with the lid rails, and tighten, adjusting to align the inside edges.
