How to Relay Tessellated Tiles
| Tessellated tiles are small squares or blocks arranged in checkered or mosaic patterns. This method was first done by Cistercian monks in the 12th century, who made earthenware tiles. The tiles are fairly plain on their own but add spectacular colour when laid out in geometric patterns. Traditionally, a rubble base (filled with building waste when the house was built) was topped with a sand and cement screed base, then covered with tiles. It’s relatively unstable, so the tiles on top often subside, leaving an uneven surface. |

STEP 1
Pull up broken tiles
Remove tiles using a cold
chisel or scraper, without damaging
the sand and cement base or
adjacent tiles. With a scraper,
remove debris from the area,
especially around the corners
and sides of the remaining tiles.
STEP 2
Spread the tile adhesive
Roughen the base with a cold
chisel or scutching hammer to assist
the tile adhesive. Brush or vacuum
debris and dust from the area. With
a stick or trowel, spread the adhesive
onto the area to be repaired. Create
an even bed using a notched trowel.
STEP 3
Lay replacement tiles
Lay the new tiles on the
adhesive, gently seating them in place
without pressing too hard. If needed,
gently tap them into position using
a rubber mallet or the handle of a
hammer. Wipe away excess adhesive
with a clean, damp cloth.
Tiling Tips
Replacement tiles can be
matched by removing a damaged
tile and taking it to a supplier.
New Titles
should be positioned
where they’re most inconspicuous.
Remove tiles from out-of-the-way
areas to replace prominent ones.
Use new tiles in the less visible spot.
Screed Base may need replacing
if damaged. Mix four parts sand
with one part cement and water to
bind the mix without making it wet.
Trowel into the area and level off.
