It’s mostly used to bore holes in various materials by fitting a drill bit into the chuck at the front, which is then rotated by the motor when power is switched on. Using different accessories in the chuck means the drill can be used for sanding, cutting and polishing. There are many variations on the basic design, from large pedestal drill presses to lightweight battery-powered units. Each has its place, but for value, versatility and power it’s difficult to go past the classic corded electric drill.

BIT AND SPEED SELECTION

Ensure the bit suits the material being drilled, and is fitted straight and tight. Select the appropriate speed, taking into account the drill bit size and the type of substrate.

HOLDING THE DRILL

Hold the drill with two hands, one on the trigger handle, the other on the side handle.

STARTING THE DRILL

Pull the trigger and start slowly before applying light pressure and more speed, but don’t push too hard

OPERATING THE DRILL

Slowly plunge the bit in and out of the hole to release dust build-up and prevent overheating or jamming.
TIP: If the motor gets hot, run the drill unencumbered at full speed for a minute so circulating air cools it.
