Installing a Ceramic Tile Splashback
A step-by-step guide to help you build your own splashback
What you'll need
- Masking tape and abrasive paper
- Carpenter's leve;
- Pencil and permanent marker
- Tile spacers and straight edge
- Tiles
- Tile saw or hand cutter
- Sealant and sealnt gun
- Tile nippers (if needed)
- Electric drill and hole saw (if needed)
- Notched trowel
- Tile adhesive
- Grout or rubber squeegee
- Sponge and towel or scouring pad
- Silicon sealant and angled foam brush
STEP 1
Splashbacks should be at least 200mm high. Make sure the walls are clean and sound; sand glossy painted surfaces. Plan tile layout to minimise cutting (inset). Pencil layout marks on wall to act as a guide.

STEP 2
Mark cut lines on tiles with a permanent marker. If you have many cuts, rent a tile saw; otherwise, use a hand cutter. For curved cuts, use tile nippers; for holes, use a carbide-tipped hole saw in an electric drill.

STEP 3
Spread adhesive to two-thirds the thickness of the tile using the smooth edge of a notched trowel, then comb with notched edge. Use only as much as can be covered in 20 minutes or so.

STEP 4
Press tiles in place with a slight twisting motion, starting at bottom and working up. Use a straightedge to check the alignment and evenness of plane. Allow the adhesive to cure for at least 48 hours.

STEP 5
For grouting, see ‘Replacing a Damaged Ceramic Tile’ above. When finished, seal between the benchtop and the backsplash several days later. After a week, apply silicone sealant to the grout.
