Reader project - James's bay window
Reader James Murchie’s new Balinese garden cut the light into the small spare bedroom so he decided a bay window would solve both problems.

Says James, ‘A new head beam was needed to support the roof and held in place with double studs, and the existing slab was extended to match the dimensions of the new window, with an extra 150mm all round.
‘The window was positioned and flashed and secured to the studs then I built the bay roof from plywood, weatherproofed and finished it with a brush-type bamboo to suit the style.’
James bought the window on eBay for $100 and the project cost just $600.
