The daughter of pastors from Santa Barbara, California, is easily a match for Lady Gaga or Rihanna: Daring outfits, saucy remarks and over-the-top songs like California Gurls have turned Katy Perry into a superstar. The self-con- fident 26-year-old likes to pose like a 1950’s pin-up girl, with a good deal of self-mockery included. Combining the features of female vamp and blushing maiden she has become the model for millions of little girls.

Incidentally, she rules the global charts with her mixture of R&B and Power Pop almost as she likes. For example with her second album
Teenage Dream, one of the most successful recordings in 2010. She currently presents it to the world on her extensive tour – as Mrs Perry- Brand, by the way, for she married British comedian Russell Brand (Get Him To The Greek) last October. Reader’s Digest has met the newly-wed in London.

Reader’s Digest: Katy, that’s quite a revealing outfit you’re wearing on the cover artwork for your latest album...

 

Katy Perry: I pose in a cotton candy bed, actually. It’s by an artist named Will Cotton. I discovered him online when I was looking for things that would influence me in the record, in visuals things. And I saw that he put women in these beautiful settings, almost kind of innocent, childlike but still sexy, chic and sweet, like in Candyland. And I love all things cute, which is reflected on the cover.

RD: Cotton candy is pretty sticky, isn’t it?

 

KP: Definitely, but I love it! I bought a cotton candy machine right after I finished posing for that.

RD: You did?

KP: Yes, you can buy them on the internet for 120 dollars.
