Reader project - Kim's level backyard
A backyard in a hilly suburb is flattened out to create a space for the kids to play

Related Stories
We live in a hilly suburb but needed a flat outdoor area for our three kids to play. Because of the position of our block, getting digging machinery in and soil out would have meant massive costs so my husband decided to DIY.
The project took four months of effort every day after work and every weekend. The entire area was dug up by hand, retaining walls were built and the soil was redistributed.
It was hard work, particularly digging into clay. Everyone thought we were crazy and my husband lost about 10 kilos in the process.
But we can’t believe the difference it’s made. The kids spend most days outside playing. I’ve been able to put in new garden beds and hubby can sit back and enjoy the fruits of his labour.
