BICARBONATE OF SODA Use bicarb when you need a mild abrasive. It has very low toxicity.
BORAX A naturally occurring alkaline mineral salt that dissolves grease and kills ants and cockroaches. It’s biodegradable, but toxic if ingested, so use with care.
LEMON JUICE A milder and nicer smelling alternative to bleach. It inhibits mould growth, deodorises and removes stains.
SALT Abrasive and disinfecting. Good for scouring pans and kitchen utensils.
SOAP FLAKES Buy pure flakes or make your own. They’re totally biodegradable and low in toxicity.
SODIUM CARBONATE Good for cleaning the kitchen. Cuts through grease, removes stains and softens water.
TEA-TREE AND EUCALYPTUS OIL Cleaners and natural disinfectants to finish off after washing surfaces.
WHITE VINEGAR Good for cleaning toilets. Removes bathroom scum, hard water deposits and metal tarnish.
GLYCERINE A by-product of soap-making. Helps mix oil with water and dissolves dirt. Mostly derived from vegetable oil or animal fats, but 10 per cent is produced from petroleum.
