One of my favourite snacks is tamari coated nuts and seeds. These are made by tossing a mixture of nuts and seeds in tamari, a type of soy sauce, and then baking them in the oven.

You can buy tamari coated nuts and seeds from health food stores, but they're often hard to find and expensive. So I often make my own.

While you could use regular soy sauce, the beauty of tamari is it has a richer and more complex flavour. While tamari may be more expensive then normal soy, I think it's worth it.

To make your own:

  • Preheat your oven to 170°C.

  • Place 2 cups of mixed nuts and seeds in a bowl and pour over 1½ tablespoons of tamari. Toss to combine, so the seeds are completely coated.

  • Spread the nuts and seeds out on a baking tray and place in the oven.

  • Bake for about 10 minutes, until golden brown. Make sure you keep an eye on them, and turn regularly while cooking, as they can burn easily.

  • Once cooked, pour the nuts and seeds onto a plate, so they stop cooking and cool down quickly.

  • When cooled, store in an airtight container in the fridge.

Have you tried tamari coated nuts and seeds?
