Build a slide-in storage system for plastic crates

This system gets the garage clutter out of the way and into unused space near the ceiling. It’s built around reinforced plastic crates (from hardware stores) that hang from carriages fixed to ceiling joists. Measure the height above the garage door and buy crates to fit. These are 330mm-deep and require 460mm clearance, including carriages.

STEP 1

Take the measurements
Measure the top of the crate to determine the width of the crate rim (19mm in this case) and the size of the bottom flanges of the carriages (75mm).

Overhead Storage, Cut 75mm-wide 19mm plywood for the bottom flanges.

STEP 2

Make the carriages
Cut 75mm-wide 19mm plywood for the bottom flanges. Centre on 1200mm-long 90 x 35mm pine, glue and fasten with 50mm x 8g screws every 250mm. Turn over, centre the 125mm-wide top flanges and glue and screw in place.

Overhead Storage, Use a stud finder to locate the ceiling joists

STEP 3

Locate the ceiling joists
Use a stud finder to locate the ceiling joists (ours were at 600mm centres) and mark position with
chalk lines.
TIP Probe with a nail to make sure the chalk lines are in the centres of the joist

Overhead Storage, Mark each carriage 300mm from the end and align the mark with the joist position.

STEP 4

Position the first carriage
Mark each carriage 300mm from the end and align the mark with the joist position. For 450mm joist centres, allow 150mm at each end. Screw the first carriage temporarily to each joist on one side of the flange with 75mm x 10g screws.

Overhead Storage, Cut a 90 x 35mm template of the crate dimensions and mark the location of the top edge of the next carriage.

STEP 5

Position other carriages
Cut a 90 x 35mm template of the crate dimensions and mark the location of the top edge of the next carriage. Mark the rear side, then screw it and the other carriages in place on one side only. Slide the crates into place to check the fit.
