Make a 750 x 500 x 335mm box using 16mm MDF and simple butt joints secured with 40mm x 8g timber screws, then upholster it.
You’ll need about 1.5 metres of 1520mm-wide fabric, with 1500mm of 1500mm-wide wadding to cover the box and lid and 750 x 500 x 50mm high-density foam for the lid. Also buy eight buttons, either self-covering or contrasting. Find all the materials at a haberdashery or craft store.
Use velcro, hinges or timber cleats to secure the lid to the box.
To attach the wadding and fabric to the box use a staple gun, costing about $60 plus $5 for a box of staples, from a hardware store.
You’ll also need a sewing machine for joining the fabric and a large upholstery needle and thick cord for attaching the buttons.
Find timber or stainless-steel legs at a hardware store, about $45, or add lockable castors for mobility.
How to make an ottoman
1. Assemble the box

Butt the long sides over the short, countersink three 2mm pilot holes into each join and secure with screws. Lay the base on the sides, drill three countersunk pilot holes on the short sides and five on the long, securing with screws and attaching the legs.
2. Attach the wadding

Cut 2500 x 430mm wadding to cover the sides of the box, folding over the top by 30mm and stapling it to the inside, down the sides at the corners and across the base.
TIP - Set the gun head square to the edge, keep it flat and pull the trigger.
3. Cover the box with fabric

Cut two panels of 1310 x 430mm fabric to wrap around the box with an overhang of 30mm at the top and base, joining at the centre of the shorter sides. Use a sewing machine to join the panels and slip the sleeve over the box, stapling the overhang.
