Many pet costumes are secured with elastic bands that can wreak serious intestinal havoc if Fido decides to snack on them.

In fact, each year thousands of family pets become seriously ill or die during the holidays because we’re so busy running around that we forget the basics of keeping our four-legged family member safe. So while you’re making sure everyone in your life has the Christmas of their dreams, ensure your pet’s safety with these little tips:

• Cover all exposed electrical cords with duct tape.
• Resist the temptation to trim your tree with tinsel and fake snow. Both are harmful to animals if eaten.
• Hang precious or fragile ornaments towards the top of the tree and make sure any edible decorations are well out of reach.
• Mistletoe, poinsettias, holly and Christmas greens are poisonous so keep them out of Fido’s way.
• Fully cover your tree stand so your pets don’t drink the water.
• Finally, just because you’ve given yourself license to overindulge – don’t pass it on to your pet. Even small doses of sugary, spicy or fatty foods can cause noxious intestinal issues… something every celebration can do without!

I agree with you totally, Gillian Schlafrig. It has always been, that our animal friends are treated as family and treated like our children so they are given the respect and love they rightly deserve and like children they are not subjected to things that are not safe for them or they don't like and most animals don't like being dressed up, a coat to keep them warm and dry is sometimes pushing their boundaries!!!

Any pet-lover knows that an animal is NOT a toy and should be treated lovingly as an ANIMAL not a toy !!!!!
