“Arthritis is one of the most common long-term diseases in Australia.”
The prevalence of arthritis is on the rise, with the condition affecting more than 3.1 million Australians, according to a 2010 report by the Australian Institute of Health & Welfare (AIHW). Largely attributed to Australia’s ageing population, the condition affects women more than it does men.
As there is no cure for arthritis, it is important to consider ways to relieve pain and reduce chronic symptoms. According to the AIHW report, the treatment and management of arthritis is bound by five basic principles: stop the disease process; keep the joints moving; prevent deformity; reconstruct the joints if needed; and rehabilitate. Combined with careful management of your medication, these options give the best result in reducing inflammation and minimising joint damage.
Dietary supplements are also important – both glucosamine and chondroitin may help to relieve pain and reduce cartilage breakdown in people with osteoarthritis. There is some evidence that omega-3 oils and glucosamine may relieve joint stiffness in people with rheumatoid arthritis. To prevent and manage arthritis on your own terms, stick to your exercise program, maintain a healthy weight, and consider massage therapy.
Massage to relieve arthritic pain
There’s no scientific proof that massage can treat arthritis, but it certainly alleviates the pain. According to a 2002 Victorian study, passive manual therapies such as massage can help improve health-related quality of life in people with arthritis. It can relax and soothe muscles, loosen stiff joints, boost mobility, and ease mental tension. Self-massage can be easy, but don’t massage inflamed joints as this can worsen your condition.
