What you'll need

  • Work gloves
  • Galvanised nails or screws
  • Pinch bar or screwdriver
  • Epoxy wood filler
  • Hammer and wood chisel
  • Saw
  • Angle grinder or hacksaw blade (optional)
  • Coach bolts
  • Matching decking timber
  • Water-repellent stain and sealer

STEP 1

Remove damaged board using a pinch bar for nails or a screwdriver for screws. If you can’t get nails or screws out, try cutting them from underneath the deck board, using an angle grinder or hacksaw blade.

STEP 2

Inspect the underlying joist and remove any rotten timber. If timber is wet, let it dry, then apply wood filler. Cut a reinforcing joist from hardwood and secure it to the damaged joist with coach bolts.

STEP 3

Cut the new board to the exact length and width of the existing decking. Treat with stain and sealer. When dry, position the board and attach it to the joists with galvanised nails or self-drilling screws.
