Make shelving for baskets

Designed to fit standard 350 x 500 x 250mm woven baskets this timber shelf frame uses simple butt joints with adhesive and nails to secure the slats plus screws to attach the legs.

 

Standing 960mm high, it can be made from hardwood such as maple, costing about $4 a metre.

 

To complete it, sand the timber all over and slightly round over the edges using 180 grit abrasive paper then apply a natural finish with two coats of outdoor furniture oil.

 

TIP To make the frame we used rich, dense Tasmanian oak, costing about $10 a metre.

 

Measure the parts and use a mitre box with a tenon saw to cut them by hand or clamp a cutting jig to a mitresaw.

 

TO MAKE THE JIG secure a cleat of 100 x 42 x 19mm timber to a 900 x 140 x 19mm offcut with screws then measure 510mm between the edge of the mitresaw blade and the cleat, and clamp to the mitresaw.

 

Cut 20 slats then reposition the jig to 360mm for the crossrails.
