Store 550 DVDs
A DIY solution to storing DVDs

A handsome, Eastern-inspired cabinet neatly conceals hundreds of DVDs. Here's how to build it.
This compact cabinet was made from 16mm MDF. Have your MDF cut to size to ensure pieces are square and identical, and follow Diagrams 1 and 2 when marking shelf positions. You can use a natural timber veneer board, although the shelves would need to be biscuit jointed and clamped for the required gluing time. The cabinet is painted with two coats of British Paints Indian Red on the outside, with Hidden Bear for the handle. A sealer was applied to the internal faces on both sides of the shelves and one side of the back.

STEP 1
Position the shelves
Lay two sides face-to-face with ends and front edges flush. Mark position of top shelf with a 16mm MDF offcut, continue with consistent 210mm spacing. Square shelf positions down front edges. Lay open both sides then square lines across inside faces.

STEP 2
Masking up
Apply a strip of masking tape to the shelf positions and trim tape to about 10mm wide. This provides a glue bond for the shelves. Apply one coat of primer/sealer by roller or brush.

STEP 3
Assemble the shelving
Remove masking tape. Glue and screw top shelf flush with the end of the side with two 50mm x 8g screws into a pre-drilled 3mm hole. Use the spacer block and continue attaching remaining shelves.

STEP 4
Complete the assembly
Repeat assembly process for the opposite side, working top to bottom using the spacer block. Attach the back to the cabinet with 25mm x 6g screws. Repeat the process for both doors.
