Take a weekend to build a small movable deck using treated pine, adding fabric for shade

STEP 1

Assemble the side frames
Position side beams on the posts 200mm from the base with a 35mm overhang each end and clamp, check for square then drill pairs of 10mm holes, securing with galvanised bolts.
TIP The overhang allows the front and back beams to sit flush.

STEP 2

Attach the beams
Lay the corner pavers to position the side frames, clamping the front and back beams to the posts inside the overhang, drill two offset bolt holes to avoid the side beam bolts, securing with galvanised bolts.

STEP 3

Secure the centre beam
Position a cleat at the ends of the centre beam, securing with treated pine screws. Use a 15mm high spacer to clamp the beam so the top edge is higher than the sides then secure the cleats to the side beams.

STEP 4

Attach the battens
Position and clamp the front, back and side battens against the beams using 15mm spacers to make them the same height as the centre beam, drill 2mm pilot holes every 200mm, apply exterior adhesive to the battens and secure with screws.

STEP 5

Prepare the roof supports
Mark 10mm from the ends of the roof supports to make 45° cuts, rounding the edges with 80 grit abrasive paper. From the cuts mark, 10mm and 90mm to position the post.
TIP Measure between the posts to make roof supports span the same spacing.

STEP 6

Secure the roof supports
Through the supports drill 8mm clearance hole for the posts, lift the supports into position and secure with 150mm galvanised bugle screws.
TIP Use a mobile drill guide to drill accurate clearance holes through the centreline of the roof supports.

STEP 7

Add braces and battens
Mark the corner braces to length and cut at 45°, drill 3.5mm pilot holes and secure with 100mm screws. Position roof end battens above the centre of the posts (see Diagram), position the remaining battens and secure with 150mm screws.

STEP 8

Notch the platform boards
Use a post offcut to mark
a notch at the ends of the first and last platform boards 35mm from the outside edge. To make the notch drill 10mm holes in the corners and use a jigsaw to cut, checking the fit.

STEP 9

Secure platform boards
Position the boards on the beams using 10mm spacers, drill 2mm pilot holes over the battens and centre beam, securing with screws. On back posts measure 150mm from the platform for the lowest back and side slats, securing the remaining slats 100mm apart.
