For those who are unable to venture to the local gym, working out in your own home can have its benefits. But before you rush to buy a treadmill or rowing machine, have a think:

• Try renting on a month-to-month basis to see if you will actually use it long-term – and if it will fit in your house. Some companies will even take the rental dollars off if you decide to buy outright. Ring around.

• Make sure you know how to use the equipment safely and effectively. Some firms will deliver and set up the equipment in your home before you even buy. If not, ask for dimensions and weights of the flat-packed item and recruit a friend to help you pick up and assemble.

• Inspect the frame and its components – ensure the moving parts appear durable and operate smoothly. Ask for a warranty and check any refund or return policies.

• Check if the machine has any limitations. If you’re on the heavier side, you may feel safer with a sturdier treadmill with handrails and better weight support.
