Great photos require great subjects – not a great camera. This photo of Angie and Paul Bell with their twin grandchildren, taken by Julie Slavin, shows what can be achieved with a simple setup when you get the timing just right.

Let your subjects talk, give them a prop and don’t be afraid to have fun. This photo of Graham Gibbons finds him at home in his shed, and his sense of ease with the photographer and his surrounds shines through.

The Rule of Thirds is a well-known composition technique. Divide the frame of your shot into thirds, both horizontally and vertically. Then, place your subject along one of the lines to increase visual interest. The Rule of Thirds is on display in Kerri Ambler’s carefully balanced photo of actor Geoff Morell.

Make the most of natural light

Light is the lifeblood of great photos. Make the most of natural light at different points throughout the day to give your photos depth and warmth. This photo finds Leca and Brett at home in Molong basking in golden afternoon sunlight (note the Rule of Thirds at work!)
