The movie was banned in Singapore and Malaysia, generally due to nudity and coarse language, until 2006 when Singapore lifted the ban and gave it a rating of M18.

Directed by Oscar-winner Ang Lee, this spy thriller set in 1930s and ’40s Hong Kong and Shanghai is about a group of students who are plotting to assassinate a Chinese intelligence chief.

Locations in Ipoh and Penang in Malaysia were used as stand-ins for this time period due to their pre-war architecture.

This Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones-fronted thriller about an international art thief and an insurance investigator showcased Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Twin Towers several times.

However, then (and current) Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was reportedly displeased that the film had shown the iconic landmark as being next to squalid slums.

In reality, they are surrounded by large gardens.

Another location that featured prominently in the film is the Bukit Jalil LRT station, which stood in for Pudu LRT station, because Connery wasn’t able to pronounce the name of the former correctly.
