M otivated by a commitment to ‘do no harm’ in the delivery of life-preserving care, doctors are viewed as exemplary members of the community. In an era that has seen unprecedented disruption to public health practices, doctors have remained ever determined to deliver the highest quality medical assistance, tomanage the needs of the sick and protect the wellbeing of their patients. The trust we universally place in these hard-working, clever and highly focused professionals is based on a time-honoured tradition. The Physician’s Pledge The 2500-year-old Hippocratic Oath remains the guiding ethical and professional code, followed by doctors the world over. Its contemporary successor is the Declaration of Geneva, which was adopted by the World Medical Association at its second General Assembly in 1948. The Declaration details the serious responsibility doctors accept in treating their patients and carries with it a number of ethical considerations that doctors willingly agree to follow for the entirety of their working lives. It makes it clear that being a doctor is more than treating the sick – being a doctor is making a commitment to uphold the humanitarian goals of medicine. Every intake of fresh-faced trainee doctors recite the Physician’s Pledge as a group, side-by-side with their peers. It is often accompanied by the presentation of their stethoscope at the ‘Stethoscope Ceremony’. An essential ‘doctoring’ tool, the stethoscope is described in the Declaration of Geneva as: “one of the symbols of being a doctor PHOTOS: GETTY IMAGES
