Urochrome is a compound that forms when your body breaks down worn-out red blood cells. Because the kidneys act as waste filters, urochrome travels through them and into urine. What does that have to do with the colour of pee? Urochrome is a yellow pigment. The concentration of urochrome affects the colour: Drink more, the urochrome is diluted, and the pee is less yellow; drink less, there’s more urochrome, and it’s darker.
